Book Critique:
For the majority of members the book “In Firm Pursuit” was an enjoyable easy read. The storyline and most of the characters were very well developed. We enjoyed talking with the author and getting her perspective along with entertaining our questions and feedback. One member said this about the author,
“I thought the author was great at the meeting, it is impressive to see black folks go after what they want, do what they have to, and succeed. These are the people I like to support instead of always praising those who are privileged or feel they are entitled”
We enjoyed having the author with us and supporting her literary efforts. There were some common themes or comments that were given over and over by the book club members:
The book was a pager turner and a fairly light read
We loved the short chapters and some enjoyed it immensely
It could have been trimmed by maybe 50 – 100 pages but still enjoyable
The author has been compared to John Grisham but this book was actually an improvement over John Grisham
This was a familiar legal story setup, but having black characters that were very believable made it especially interesting
Most of the characters and the relationships were well developed and believable
Several members could visualize all of the characters but had trouble visualizing Vernetta, the main character
Most of us knew someone like “Special” and that “skeezer” Lakeesha
The author was on point with the whole corporate America thing; “The mixture of politics, money, sex and race is always messy. We have all faced down a Haley or two in our careers.
All in all a good read and a promising author.
